Tuscany Tours

In Tuscany one finds what is undoubtedly the most elegant taming of nature ever achieved by man. Like a coiffeur who leaves a few wild strands to set off a face, the Tuscans have managed to style the landscape while leaving it unbound, alive and full of beauty. Undulating sunflower-draped hills vie with castle-topped towns and all about are the Tuscans, hale and hearty, tied to the earth but never losing a sense of the refined.

Culinary tradition features local ingredients and traditional recipes; vine-ripened tomatoes, basil pesto, the soft wheat colors of pasta. Wine is a way of life and much of Tuscany is devoted to the cultivation of the grape, to be bottled and shared with the world. To visit a vineyard and taste the labor of love produced from their land in a bottle of wine paired with savory regional specialties is unforgettable.

The artisan nature of Tuscany is found every where; in its ceramics, leather goods and fashion to its wrought iron and wood work. Tuscany also guards its secrets but the right key can open up a world of surprise. Whether you love the startling grace of a Botticelli or the vine drenched hills of Chianti, our guides, chefs and chauffeurs await to unlock Tuscany's doors for the discriminating traveler.

Cities of Tuscany: Siena, Montepulciano, Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano

Siena; Tuscan City of Art and the Palio

The city of Siena in Tuscany holds a beautiful position with gorgeous views all around. Its winding stone streets and red roof tiled palazzi contain many extraordinary secrets and the architecture varies from medieval, to Gothic and Renaissance. Unusual for its great Campo used for its famous Palio horse race makes a delightful cafe lined center where people love to hang out on a sunny day. The history of the Palio is found in the art and architecture of the city, divided up into districts representing each of the contrada with their distinguishing and often whimsical symbols. Great artists of the Middle Ages created iconic works of art which are very well displayed in Siena, featuring the fascinating painters Buoninsegna, Lorenzetti and Martini, as well as the early Renaissance sculptor Jacopo della Quercia. One of the most interesting places to visit is the Palazzo Publicco with its great tower and wonderful frescoes which give an great and well preserved vision of the medieval world. You can even dare to go up the campanile tower for a stunning view of the Tuscan countryside. The extraordinarily preserved architecture of the city also holds many wonders from the Gothic and Romanesque Duomo.

With our excellent historians, you can visit the famous Cities of Art of Tuscany and learn about the local people and the works of art that are so abundant in this region. You will see glorious but often little known artworks of incomparable beauty as well as sample some excellent local cuisine for which the city of Siena is famous, always at your own pace and far from the big groups of mass tourism.

City Highlights of Lucca

The quaint and evocative city of Lucca retains the charm of a small and ancient Italian City State. Over the centuries it has managed to hold on to its independence and freedom and has miraculously escaped the devastation of war, thus retaining its historic layout. Today Lucca boasts one of the most extraordinary Tuscan art heritages. A true walled city, it is dominated by the beautiful tree-lined Renaissance walls which totally enclose it, within which its maze of medieval streets are flanked by towers and smart boutiques, enchanting Romanesque churches and bright inviting squares. Lucca will captivate every visitor, as it presents its unexpected beauty. We will visit the centrally important Piazza S. Michele in Foro, Piazza Napoleone to admire the church bearing the same name as well as the Ducal Palace and the Teatro del Giglio. We will also see the Cathedral San Martino, the important destination for medieval pilgrims who came here to worship “Il Volto Santo”( The holy Countenance of Christ), which is still today an important symbol of the city.

Inside the sacristy is the renowned sarcophagus of Ilaria del Carretto by Jacopo della Quercia. Winding through the characteristic medieval streets, we will visit Via degli Antiquari where we can see the fine antique shops and the teeming and smart Via Fillungo. Piazza Anfiteatro, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman arena, is still today one of the most picturesque landmarks of the town. Guinigi Tower, one of its kind, has a very suggestive tree lined hanging garden right on the top. Basilica di San Frediano, is one of the most ancient churches in Lucca, famous for the splendid gilded mosaic on the façade. The 16th century Walls, built for defence reasons, are today a public garden for the enjoyment of all. You can take a leisurely stroll, ride your bike or even take a ride on a carriage to better appreciate their beauty.
